Slow walks, old maps and a camera that is older than it should be.
Fog on the dykes
Left before sunrise and followed the dyke road for eleven kilometres. The fog never lifted, which turned
every windmill into a pencil sketch. Two rolls of film, maybe four frames worth keeping. The thermos was the
best decision of the day.
Re-drawing a 1910 survey map
Found a scanned survey sheet of a village that no longer exists in that shape. Spent two evenings tracing
the field boundaries over a modern satellite layer. About half of the old hedgerows are still there, just
quieter.
Three days, one ridge
Short notes from a long weekend: blisters on day one, rain on day two, a perfectly clear evening on day
three that made both worth it. Packing list and route notes are in the margin of a paper notebook, which is
where they will stay.
Developing at home, again
After a five-year break the tank, the reels and the slightly suspicious bottle of fixer came out of the
cupboard. First roll came out thin but readable. Notes on times and temperatures, mostly for future me.
